AJ Marketing - Malaysia Marketing Success Stories: 7 Campaigns from 2027

On 5 March 2026, Siti Nurhaliza sat down at a table inside a convention centre in Putrajaya to sign autographs, and the queue in front of her had come for a shopping app. That is the number-one case on this list, and it is the clearest picture of where Malaysian campaigns went this year. A film was the start of it. A bazaar, a livestream, seven celebrities and a daily deal window were the rest.

Over the past two months we have published seven Malaysia pieces on this blog, from the Top 20 creator lists to the advertising and influencer guides, and the feedback I keep getting on the case studies is that they read as single moments: one film, one post, one stream. The campaigns that moved the market in the past year were not single moments. They stacked a celebrity on top of a creator bench, an offline event on top of a social mechanic, and a commerce layer under all of it. So this shortlist takes seven campaigns from late 2025 and 2026 and breaks each one into its layers.

The ranking, so you can argue with it. First, how many layers the brand actually ran, and whether they handed off to one another or just sat side by side. Second, a published result against what the brand set out to do, or where nothing is published, a jury that saw the numbers. Third, whether it could only have happened here. A global template with local media bought against it scored low whatever the reach.

Counting down from seven.

Malaysia Marketing Success Stories: 7 Campaigns from 2027

7. SK-II × CRYBABY "Free to Bare Your Love"

AJ Marketing - Malaysia Marketing Success Stories: 7 Campaigns from 2027 - SK-II x Crybaby

SK-II put a crying cartoon girl on the most expensive bottle in Malaysian skincare, and the timing was the campaign.

CRYBABY is Pop Mart's character by Thai artist Molly Yllom, and in Malaysia it had already done the work before SK-II arrived. Pop Mart ran the first CRYBABY pop-up in Southeast Asia, "Cry Me An Ocean", at Sunway Pyramid from 14 to 24 May 2026, teased by a giant inflatable from 9 May, with Molly flown in for a signing on 16 May and entry passes released over three days.

Two months later, on 20 July, SK-II launched the limited-edition Facial Treatment Essence with CRYBABY on the red bottle, in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta on the same day. The Malaysia gift box is the 230ml essence at RM850, with a CRYBABY figurine that doubles as the bottle cap, sold at SK-II counters nationwide, selected online retailers and a Sogo promotion. The creative runs as short social films: CRYBABY on a bridge, the essence at the emotional climax, the brand's "PAT PAT" application ritual, and an invitation to share stories of emotional sincerity under the "Free to Bare" line.

SK-II seeded the gift box to the country's top beauty and luxury creators in the launch window, and the brief was built around the box rather than the essence: the unboxing, the figurine cap coming off, the first PAT PAT, posted as Reels and TikToks with the character in frame. That is the right casting for a RM850 bottle. Beauty creators carry the product credibility, luxury creators carry the price, and the CRYBABY fans who had queued at Sunway in May followed both into comment sections they would never have found on a skincare counter.

The layers: a character IP with a Malaysian fan base already queuing at a mall, a regional celebrity face, a collectible built into the product itself, short social films with a shareable ritual, a department-store promotion, and counter plus online distribution.

Seventh, because it is the cleanest example this year of borrowing a fandom rather than building one. The art toy audience that queued at Sunway in May is young, Chinese-Malaysian skewed and collects by reflex; SK-II's core buyer is a decade older and buys by habit. One bottle cap bridged them, and the price did not move. For a prestige brand entering Malaysia, this is the move I would copy: find the IP whose fans are already in the mall, and time the launch for the weeks after their event, not before it.

6. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 "Haus of Fold"

The launch of the Fold8, Fold8 Ultra and Flip8 ran as a stack. Pre-orders opened on 22 July 2026 with bundles worth up to RM1,950 and ran to 13 August, and Samsung reported demand strong enough that thousands tried to order at once and Fold8 outsold the Ultra. The "Haus of Fold" roadshow then moved through Pavilion KL, Sunway Pyramid and 1 Utama under #MeetTheFold, with hands-on challenges and eight partner tie-ins. A Comment & Win on Samsung's own channels ran from 7 to 14 August for ten pairs of premiere tickets. The consumer launch at Pavilion on 14 August brought the cast of Takluk 2: Op Daulat!, Syafiq Kyle, Mimi Lana and Kamal Adli with director Anas Ridzuan, who had shot with the phone, which tied the launch to Merdeka month.

Under the stars sat two creator tiers with two different jobs. The tech tier answered the question a RM7,299 phone raises, which is whether it is worth it: Lim Reviews, the Mandarin-language reviewer who is number sixteen on our Top 20 YouTubers in Malaysia, went deep on the hinge, the crease and the camera for the audience that reads spec sheets. The lifestyle tier answered the other question, which is what you do with it all day: Samsung's Team Galaxy bench, Anthony Mayii, Monkey Jackson, Azizi Musa, Qiwiie, Allison Yee, Tim Tiah and Ahmad Ezzrin Loy, posted everyday use and then fronted a "Team Galaxy answers foldable questions" series on Samsung's own newsroom in September, after the roadshow had closed.

The layers: a three-week pre-order window with bundles, a three-mall roadshow, eight partner brands, a social contest, a film cast at the launch, one national star as the reveal, a tech-creator tier for depth, a lifestyle-creator tier for everyday storytelling, and a newsroom content series that kept the creators working a month after the event.

Sixth, because the two-tier creator structure is the part I would lift straight into a brief. A foldable is a product people need explained twice, once by someone who has taken it apart and once by someone who has lived with it, and Samsung cast each tier for its question rather than its follower count. Then it put the celebrity on top only once the bench was already posting, so the Siti night landed on an audience that had seen the phone for three weeks.

5. WONDA "Semarakkan Sokongan Bersama WONDA"

A canned coffee brand decided that Malaysian football is a daily ritual, not a match, and built a campaign for every hour of the ritual.

Etika's WONDA launched the platform in June 2026 around the national team. The brand film, "Tarikan Harimau Malaya", stars Harimau Malaya players Akhyar Rashid, Syafiq Ahmad and Safawi Rasid, with actor Amir Ahnaf reprising his Kahar character for comic weight. Astro Shaw produced the TVC. Then the layers: a five-part documentary, "Kisah di Sebalik Harimau", on Astro Arena with Faisal Halim, Fergus Tierney and Syafiq Ahmad; a daily 90-second "WONDA Football Line" on FLYFM; creator-led content on social; weekly contests for signed jerseys and merchandise; and a redemption at myNEWS, six cans for a WONDA × Harimau Malaya magnetic card holder through the myNEWS app.

The layers: three footballers and an actor at the front, a TVC, a long-form documentary, daily radio, creator content, weekly social contests and a retail redemption.

It earns fifth place for the handoffs. The film gets attention, the documentary turns a 30-second association into five episodes of it, radio keeps the brand in the car on match day, the contest gives fans something to do every week, and the six-can redemption turns all of it into a purchase at a convenience store. That is the shape I draw on the whiteboard when a client says "we want a sports sponsorship": the sponsorship is one layer, and it is the cheapest one.

4. AFFIN and Siti Nurhaliza's Legacy 30 concert, January 2026

AJ Marketing - Malaysia Marketing Success Stories: 7 Campaigns from 2027 - Affin Bank
Source: Affin Bank

A bank put a singer's face on a debit card, and the first 1,000 people who opened the account at its headquarters got her makeup palette. That is what a celebrity ambassadorship looks like when the brand means it.

Start with the casting, because it is the part most brands get wrong. Siti Nurhaliza is thirty years into a career with no scandal attached, which for a bank is the first filter. She is a brand owner herself, with SimplySiti in beauty and AFIYA alongside it, so she understands a product launch from the inside. And her audience is the one a mid-sized Malaysian bank most needs: Malay, multigenerational, loyal across decades, and willing to queue. In January she sold out Bukit Jalil for her Legacy 30 concert, 58,000 of 60,000 tickets in under a month, with AFFIN as main sponsor and its event app ATMOZFR making its debut inside the show.

That concert was the first layer. The ambassadorship then widened through 2026. On 23 September AFFIN launched the LuminouSITI Visa Debit Card at Menara AFFIN @ TRX, with Siti on the face of the card and a launch party that doubled as a fan meeting.

The second concert closes the year. Konsert Tradisional Gema Bumantara at the National Stadium on 17 October 2026, with Siti joined by King Nassar, Lesty Kejora, Noraniza Idris and Haziq Rosebi, had an AFFIN cardholder presale three days before public sale, a ticket giveaway for new customers, the 20% discount for existing cardholders, and an AFFIN booth at the stadium where the LuminouSITI card goes on sale before it reaches branches two days later.

The layers: one ambassador who is also a brand owner, a sponsored 60,000-seat concert with an app launched inside it, a co-branded debit card, a product giveaway tied to account opening, a launch party and fan meeting at the bank's headquarters, a cardholder presale, a new-customer ticket giveaway, a cardholder discount, and a card-sales booth at a second stadium concert.

Fourth, because this is the model for an ambassadorship that keeps working between appearances. Most Malaysian ambassador deals buy a face for a film and a press conference. AFFIN built the year around the two nights the whole fanbase was already going to turn up for, and in between gave the fans a reason to hold the bank's card: her face on it, her products discounted on it, her concert cheaper with it. The sponsorship is one layer, the card is the product, and every layer points at the account opening.

3. McDonald's "Duo Terhangat", a reunion single, a social challenge and a drive-thru concert

McDonald's Malaysia closed a burger campaign with a free concert at a drive-thru in Putrajaya, and the headliners were two rappers who had not shared a stage since 2022.

TUJU and MK were both in the hip-hop group K-Clique until TUJU left abruptly. The campaign, which ran from 26 June to 23 July 2025, put them back together as "Duo Terhangat", one standing for the Spicy Chicken McDeluxe, the other for the returning Spicy Lemon Chicken McDeluxe. The layers landed in order. A teaser week, then the original track and its "Hangat OG & Hangat Lit" music video on 9 July under #DuoTerhangat and #YangHangat. A 7.7 price drop on the burger from RM14.20 to RM7.70 to turn the first week of attention into orders. A social challenge whose 100 winners got front-row VIP tickets and a meet-and-greet. Then "Konsert Duo Terhangat" on 25 July at the McDonald's Putrajaya Presint 2 drive-thru, free entry, with Loca B, Alyph, SonaOne and Benzooloo supporting, life-sized fries and a neon arch on the set, the first 1,000 through the gate fed a free burger, merchandise giveaways and photo booths. A separate "Party Tenders Beat" activation at McD Pantai Sentral in late June had the group 3P performing their chicken-tenders track. The case board reports an all-time-high reach of 332,000 Malay users, a 50% rise in the Mekdi user base, a 6% lift in Spicy Chicken McDeluxe sales and 35% growth against baseline, and the campaign took a Silver for influencer marketing at the MSA Awards 2026. (Source: Kancil Awards 2025 case board; McDonald's Malaysia newsroom; Marketing-Interactive, July 2025; MSA Awards 2026)

The layers: two celebrity musicians with a story, an original single and music video, a hashtag teaser, a price promotion timed to a shopping day, a social challenge with offline rewards, a free concert with four supporting acts, a second live activation with a third act, merchandise and photo booths.

Third, because this is what a creator campaign looks like when the brand treats the artists as a reason for people to gather rather than a channel to post through. The music gave Malay audiences a reason to care, the price drop gave them a reason to buy that week, and the concert gave the fans who cared most a place to go. Each layer paid for the next one's attention.

2. vivo X500 "The Ultimate Concert Phone"

vivo's answer to "why this phone" in Malaysia is not a spec sheet. It is a creator in the stands at a concert, or a race, filming for two hours on one charge and posting the footage before the encore.

The playbook has a proven first run. For the X200 in late 2025, vivo and Initiative placed phones with KOLs and publishers at seven major concerts, Imagine Dragons, The Script, Eric Chou, Taeyang and Super Junior among them, and let them post unfiltered footage to TikTok, Reels and Shorts without paying the artists a ringgit. A mini-launch concert with Priscilla Abby and COËX was filmed entirely on the phone, and 1,380 people at the launch set a Malaysia Book of Records title. The X200 beat its flagship sales target by 16%, concert content drew 8.9 million organic views, familiarity among 18 to 24s rose 104%, and the campaign took Gold for Branded Entertainment at the MSA Awards 2025.

The X500 is the same idea scaled up, and it launches in Malaysia on 27 October 2026. The layers went out in order. Jay Chou was named vivo Imaging Ambassador in mid-October, with an unboxing of the X500 Pro Max, a campaign film reworking "Sunny Day" and a separate travel film. The product line is the brief: a 200MP ZEISS telephoto with a 400mm extender, Auto Framing Fancam Video and Super Stage AF Tracking, sold as the Ultimate Concert Phone. Pre-orders opened with benefits worth up to RM4,300, a rebate of up to RM1,000, vivo Store member perks and an SPayLater rebate, and every purchase enters a draw for tickets to Jay Chou's Carnival II tour in Malaysia in 2027.

The Malaysian creator layer is where the campaign earns its place. The brief to creators was endurance: take the phone into the longest, loudest, darkest environments a phone video ever faces and show it holding up. The standout is William Seng, who built his content around recording an F1 race, two hours of engines at full zoom and full volume, cut into a single piece that makes the case for the battery and the stabilisation better than any lab test could. Around him, other creators shot full concerts and events on the X500 and posted the raw length as the proof. For a phone whose pitch is "you can film the whole show", creators filming the whole show is the only content that counts.

The layers: a proven concert playbook with a published result, a global celebrity ambassador with three content pieces, a product spec built as a creative brief, a creator tier briefed on endurance rather than features, a pre-order bundle, a financing rebate and a concert-ticket draw tied to the ambassador's own tour.

First, because it is the only campaign on this list where the creator content is the product demonstration, and where the brand has already proved the model once with a sales number. Most phone launches hand creators a feature list. vivo handed them a venue and a time limit, and the content writes itself: the longer the recording, the stronger the claim.

1. TikTok Shop "Bazar RamRaya"

TikTok Shop's Ramadan campaign this year began as a one-minute musical and ended as a physical bazaar in Putrajaya.

Fishermen Integrated built "Bazar direka untuk anda" to run from 1 to 13 March 2026. The opening layer was a musical film set inside the TikTok Shop interface itself, with The Impatient Sisters on the track and five creators, Madnoor, Almiyaz, Neo, Nynabukater and Pipijia, cast in it. From 1 to 3 March a 72-hour "Fashion Never Sleep" live blitz ran with brands such as Zoe Arissa, Habib and Dr Cardin. Then the bazaar: 5 to 8 March at the IOI City Mall Putrajaya Convention Centre, free entry, 80 booths from local sellers, on-the-spot cart and voucher redemption, an iftar and prayer area, and seven meet-and-greet sessions headed by Siti Nurhaliza on day one and followed by Khai Bahar, Khairul Aming, Erra Fazira, Almiyaz, Mierul Aiman and Eira Syazira. A "Kecoh Lokal Bazar" livestream ran from the floor with brands, creators and live music. Underneath sat the commerce mechanics: daily 8pm "Jimat Gila" deals to 50% off, RM10 deals, 500+ products in a New Arrival Week, and instant delivery in the Klang Valley, Johor and Penang for orders before 3pm. The bazaar doubled as the public face of TikTok Shop's LIVE Hub programme with KUSKOP, which the platform says has trained 3,000+ small businesses and helped 700 incubated sellers make over RM28 million, 74% of them women-owned.

The layers: a musical brand film with five named creators, a multi-brand 72-hour livestream, a four-day offline bazaar, seven celebrity appearances, a livestream from the event floor, daily deal mechanics, an instant-delivery promise and a government-backed seller programme as the story underneath.

First, because it is the fullest stack on this list and every layer had a job. The film made the campaign a thing people recognised, the live blitz proved the format before the event, the bazaar gave the celebrities somewhere to be and the sellers someone to meet, and the deals turned foot traffic into orders on the same app the film was set inside. For a platform, that is the whole funnel built in a fortnight.

CONCLUSION

The campaigns that moved Malaysia this year ran five to nine layers each, and the ones that rank highest are the ones where each layer handed something to the next: a musical film earned a bazaar, a bazaar gave seven celebrities somewhere to be, a creator in a race stand earned the product claim, a reunion single earned a drive-thru concert.

The second finding is the celebrity. There is one in all seven, and in six of them the star was given something to do beyond the film: a stage, a presale, a meet-and-greet, a card with their face on it. A face at the front of a campaign is a layer. It is not the campaign. The creators underneath did the same work in a different register, and the best briefs on this list gave them a place to post from rather than a product to describe.

Three things I would book for 2027 from this list. The celebrity and the offline moment together, because the moment is what the fans show up for. A creator bench with a reason to post from somewhere, a bazaar, a race, a stadium queue, rather than from their bedrooms. And the commerce layer written into the brief first, a deal window, a redemption, a pre-order bundle, so the stack has somewhere to land.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How many layers does a Malaysian campaign need?

Fewer than it needs handoffs. The seven here run five to nine layers each, but the ranking rewards the ones where each layer earned the next: McDonald's price drop turned the music video's first week into orders, and the social challenge turned the orders into a crowd at the concert. Three layers that hand off beat eight that sit side by side.

From somewhere. TikTok Shop's creators were cast in the film and then streamed from the bazaar floor; vivo's creators filmed from a race stand and a concert crowd, which is where the product claim lives; Samsung split its bench into a tech tier for the spec sheet and a lifestyle tier for everyday use. The thinnest creator layers on the list, WONDA and AFFIN, are the ones that gave creators nowhere to be.

Something the audience can turn up for. In six of the seven cases the celebrity had a stage, a meet-and-greet, a presale or a card with their face on it. AFFIN gave Siti Nurhaliza's fans her face on a debit card, a presale and a discount on her concert, and a palette for opening the account. A face in a film is one layer; a face at an event is two.

Influencer marketing continues to grow due to Malaysians' trust in peer recommendations. Micro and nano-influencers are preferred for authentic engagement, especially on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Brands collaborate with local celebrities to create relatable content, boosting brand awareness and driving sales. Success depends on aligning influencers’ values with brand identity and leveraging storytelling over direct selling. (Source: IIDE)

The commerce one. WONDA's six-can redemption at myNEWS, McDonald's 7.7 price drop, TikTok Shop's 8pm deal window and vivo's pre-order bundle with the Jay Chou ticket draw were all decided before the creative. A stack with no place to land is awareness with extra steps.
